Chronology of cameras Fujifilm
In the mid-1980s, Kodak was ordered to pay Polaroid $872 million for patent infringement. The court sided with Polaroid, accusing Kodak of using its instant development technology without regard for the patents. Kodak was required to immediately cease all manufacturing and marketing of cameras and films reliant on this technology. The issue arose because Kodak had sold Fuji the rights to manufacture equivalent cameras and films under its own brand. Fuji, considered a victim, was granted the right to continue this activity, but within a restricted geographical area.
By the late 1990s, Fujifilm launched cameras utilizing a new instant development film, Instax, with global distribution.
Two films were introduced in 1998: Instax and Instax Mini. The two films are not compatible with each other, and two ranges of cameras were also launched. Those using Instax film are simply called Instax and are bulkier than those using Instax Mini film. Instax film was later renamed Instax Wide, and the cameras followed suit. It wasn't until 2017, during the resurgence of instant film, that Fujifilm launched a third film, Instax Square.

Cameras
The patent 6,173,120 filed by Fuji Photo on August 20, 1999 (inventor Tetsuya Takatori) defines the general design of the initial Instax 100 cameras.
The patent 436,977, for the Instax 200 (filed in March 2000, inventor Yutaka Senda), covers the design and technology used in the Instax 200 camera.
The design patent D 447,504 defines one of the shapes of certain Instax Mini cameras (filed in August 1999, inventor Tetsuya Takatori).
The design patent D 463,472 (filed in November 2001, inventor Kazuhiza Horikiri) defines another shape of certain Instax Mini cameras.
Numerous models are available, some of which are offered in special editions such as Hello Kitty, Minnie, Colette, Minions, etc.
From certain Square models, Fujifilm has developed hybrid models, which combine a digital camera (with a screen, memory card, etc.) and a printer for Instax Square film.
The Instax Pal (2023) falls outside the scope of this study, as it is a 100% digital camera. Its name is therefore unrelated to the film.

The Instax 100 is an affordable and straightforward-to-use camera. Its lens is protected by a cover that opens when powered on, with the lens extending from its housing. The camera is quite bulky but comfortable to hold. The most disorienting aspect of its use is the off-center position of the viewfinder.
